Panama: Opposition Wants Resignation of Social Security Chief

Panama City,  (Prensa Latina) Opposition members of parliament are demanding the resignation of Social Security Fund (CSS) director Guillermo Saez Llorens for his responsibility in 16 deaths from the bacteria KPC.

The intensive care unit of the CSS Metropolitan Hospital Complex was attacked in August 2010 by the Klebsiella pneumonia (KCP) hospital bacteria, infecting over 50 patients, 16 of whom died. Continue reading

Panama City, Jul 28 (Prensa Latina) Teachers from 15 of 16 unions began a 48-hour warning strike on Thursday to demand changes in the education system, a decision that was both supported and criticized. Spokespeople for the strikers said the strike has been observed despite opposition from the Ministry of Education, the Chamber of Commerce, other government offices, and private companies. Indigenous Panamanians Plan Anti-Gov’t Strike

Panama,  (Prensa Latina) Panamanian indigenous authorities plan to hold a national strike and mass march in the capital on Aug. 9 to protest the government’s non-compliance with the Changuinola Agreement.

The decision was made during a forum to remember wath is known as the Changuinola Massacre, and representatives of the opposition Democratic Revolutionary Party’s Secretariat for Indigenous Affairs said all indigenous communities would take part in the strike. Continue reading

Panama, May 2 (Prensa Latina) Representatives from Central America, Venezuela and the Global Environment (GEF) Fund began a workshop in this capital on Monday on strategies and projects for fighting climate change.
