Ecuador Electoral Council Confirms Referendum Victory

Quito, May 8 (Prensa Latina) National Electoral Council (CNE) president Omar Simon confirmed that the “Yes” vote had won Saturday”s 10-question referendum, according to a single sample report whose results he described as solid but unofficial.

Simon said that the official results will be announced in the coming week, but that sample had a margin of error of plus or minus 0.5 percent, with the “Yes” vote a majority.

This first sample of the results reflected a percentage of blank ballots range of 4.8 percent to 7.2 percent, and a null vote range 4.9 percent and 5.6 percent.

The CNE sample results confirmed exit poll findings, but showed a more narrow gap between “Yes” and “No” votes on some questions.

Meanwhile, the oppositionâÖs main spokesmen publicly acknowledged the defeat of the “NO” vote, and some of them said on the Ecuador Decide television program that they supported a process of national harmony. Since early Sunday night, President Rafael Correa has been celebrating the referendum victory, along with hundreds of members of his PAIS Alliance Movement in the capital, in a festive atmosphere that included the singing of revolutionary songs.
