Cuban Antiterrorist Turns 48 in U.S. Prison

Havana, Aug 18 (Prensa Latina) Cuban antiterrorist fighter Fernando Gonzalez is celebrating his 48th birthday on Thursday in a U.S. prison, where he has been unjustly held since September 12, 1998 despite his declared innocence.

Fernando, along with Ramon Labañino, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Gerardo Hernandez, were detained for monitoring anti-Cuban terrorist groups based in Miami, Florida.

After a manipulated trial held in Miami, the Five, as they are universally known, are currently serving harsh sentences ranging from 15 years to double life terms.

“What I did was motivated by love for my country and the conviction that history shows it is the only option left to the Cuban people to prevent the deaths of innocent people,” Fernando stated in his December 18, 2001 hearing.

The Cuban antiterrorist, who is celebrating his birthday away from his homeland and loved ones, was initially sentenced to 19 years, and in December 2009, that prison term was reduced slightly, to 17 years and nine months.
