London, Aug 16 (Prensa Latina) The Anglo-Dutch oil company Shell said it detected another oil spill on Tuesday in an inaccessible seabed area of the Gannet Alpha platform in the North Sea, 180 kilometers from Aberdeen, Scotland.
Shell confirmed Monday that more 54,600 gallons of oil had spilled into the sea from an initial leak discovered in the same place on Saturday, and at least five barrels daily continue to spill into the ocean.
According to Glen Cayley, technical director of Shell’s exploration and production activities, control of the second leak would be very complicated because of its hard-to-reach location, surrounded by aquatic plants.
Cayley declared that the company regrets this accident, the worst in the United Kingdom in 10 years.
Environmental groups were concerned about the danger the spill represents for marine flora and fauna in the area.
