Hugo Chavez Warns of Opposition Violence

Caracas,  (Prensa Latina) Opposition groups are preparing to carry out violent, anti-democratic actions leading up to the 2012 elections, President Hugo Chavez said Friday. The so-called Democratic Unity Council is treacherous, Chavez said in a telephone interview with the Venezolana de Television news channel, calling on the Venezuelan people and the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) to mobilize for victory.

In recent days, subliminal messages directed at the armed forces have considerably increased, Chavez said, noting that retired military officers in Venezuela and other Latin American countries have been financed by the U.S. government.

Chavez warned that counterrevolutionary forces would try to bring back those former generals who are subordinate to Washington.

He called on the opposition not to carry out those plans; first, to keep the peace, and second, because the government response would be extremely firm.

The PSUV must be strengthened from the bottom up, he said, urging active participation in a nationwide mobilization that will begin Saturday to conduct a new census among party ranks.
