Addis Ababa, Aug 1 (Prensa Latina) The African Union convened a donors” summit to rise urgently-needed humanitarian aid for the victims of a famine in East Africa.
The imminent threat of death is hanging over tens of millions in Somalia, Kenya, Djibuti and Ethiopia due to a drought affecting the African Horn, war, and food shortages, which together could result in the worst human tragedy of the 21st century.
Since the outbreak of the crisis, tens of thousands of people, especially the most vulnerable, the elderly and children, have died as they flee to areas hoping to receive aid from the UN or other humanitarian organizations.
The AU announced the summit in a press release issued in the Ethiopian capital, where the organization is based.
The crisis in Mogadishu was aggravated this past weekend by heavy rains that affected fragile shelters set up in refugee camps.
