ASEAN Boosts Naval Cooperation

Hanoi, Jul 28 (Prensa Latina) The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is holding the 5th Conference of Commanders of its naval forces today, in Vietnam for the first time.

 Under the slogan “Regional naval cooperation for peace and maritime security,” the forum is attended by the top naval commanders of nine of the 10 member countries of the bloc, plus the Laotian defense attaché in Vietnam.

In the event, which opened Wednesday, the participants are discussing measures for cooperation in response to future challenges of regional security.

They will also discuss two Vietnamese initiatives regarding naval cooperation within ASEAN and the exchange of experiences among young officers.

Vietnamese Defense Minister Phung Quang Thanh confirmed that collaboration plays an important role in peacekeeping and regional stability in the sea.

The event takes place after the ASEAN Security Forum, which was focused on conflicts between nations over the sovereignty of the East Sea, also known as the South China Sea.
