Amy Winehouse Dead at 27

In a turn of events no less sickening for being oft-predicted, Amy Winehouse has been found dead in her London home. The singer — who has a long, well-documented, and extremely troubled history with drugs and alcohol; and whose most famous song included the lines, “They tried to make me go to rehab, I said no, no, no” — was only 27. She now has the ignominious distinction of joining a group of gone-too-soon, legendary-but-at-what-cost musicians — Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain — who died at that age. In the last few months, Winehouse, a onetime electric, bee-hived, live talent, seemed to be taking baby steps toward getting her life and career in order: She recorded a song and went on tour, though that was quickly canceled after a fewdisastrous performances. Winehouse recorded two records over her career; the second, 2006’s Back to Black, which featured her trademark neo-Motown sound, is a classic. Go put it on. [BBC]
