Quito, Jul 16 (Prensa Latina) Poverty continues to decrease in Ecuador as a result of an economic recovery from the crises of recent years, said Rene Ramirez, head of the National Secretariat for Planning and Development.
Poverty has considerably declined in the country, from 22.91 percent in 2010 to 19.27 percent this year, stated Ramirez, who called it very good news for Ecuadorians.
Inequality between the rich and the poor also decreased last year, with a significant reduction of the unemployment rate for the poorest, which is higher than the national unemployment rate.
Of the people who receive a social assistance benefit called the Human Development, 8,000 are no longer unemployed, and full-time employment rose by 4.08 percent nationwide, it was reported.
According to Ramirez and the Minister for the Coordination of Social Development, Jeannette Sanchez, the reality refutes reports issued by the Ethos Foundation, which provided a catastrophic vision of poverty in Ecuador with figures from 2006.
It was precisely from 2006 to 2010 that social investment was doubled in education and tripled in health. The problems have not been solved, however, the political decision to make social changes is showing encouraging results, Sanchez stressed.
