Casa de las Americas Exhibit on Caribbean Myths, Realities

Havana, Jul 16 (Prensa Latina) The myths, religions and popular traditions of the Caribbean are the focus of an exhibit by Cuban artist Caridad Regina Garcia that opened Saturday at the Mariano Rodriguez Gallery.

As part of the activities sponsored by Casa de las Americas for the Year of People of African Descent, the exhibit comprises 13 works reflecting the ideas of Garcia, nurtured by a wealth of folklore, deities and the mythology of the countryside and oral tradition.

In remarks at the opening, fine arts specialist Aurora Díaz Valdivia said that Garcia´s work stands out because of the Caribbean sentiment in her work, which reflects a region excluded by the dominant cultures.

Figures as the güije or the “mother of water”, present in Cuban foklore, are part of this exhibition using gray, black and brown tones in “an excellent texture that experiences with matheric art besides the technique of oil.”
