Mexican Gov”t Admits to Persistence of Torture

Mexico City, Jul 15 (Prensa Latina) The Mexican government admitted that torture and impunity persist in the country, according to an official report delivered to UN Higher Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay and released Friday.

The report also says that the Mexican State had to use the armed forces to fight organized crime, and that they would remain in the country’s streets until the federal police was stronger.

The report, Advances and Challenges in Human Rights, drafted by the Foreign Affairs Secretariat and 10 other government agencies, was delivered to Pillay during her recent visit to the country.

The report details measures adopted in the last 10 years to create a legal framework on human rights, according to Mexico’s international commitments.
