South America Donates 70 Million to Haiti

Quito,  (Prensa Latina) The member countries of the Union of South American Nations have contributed 70 million of 100 million USD promised for rebuilding Haiti following the 2010 earthquake, UNASUR ambassador Rodolfo Mattarollo reported.

Mattarollo, special representative of the UNASUR-Haiti Technical Secretariat, informed UNASUR General Secretary Maria Emma Mejia about the progress of the cooperation mission he leads in Haiti, in line with that government’s priorities.

The 12 UNASUR member countries have made their donations through direct cooperation and the multilateral bank.

The amount granted so far has made it possible to carry out 114 projects, while 77 others have been identified and coordinated, he said.

Cooperation in Haiti has focused on issues such as health, food sovereignty, local production, construction and improvement of infrastructures, environment preservation, strengthening of local capacities, and defending human rights, Mejia stressed.

They are all global issues that will help Haiti overcome the problems, she added.
