El Salvador: Three Dead in Clash between Inmates

San Salvador, July 1 (Prensa Latina) A clash on Friday between inmates of the prison in the western city of Santa Ana left three dead and at least seven injured, authorities said.

The news was confirmed by the Director of Prisons, Douglas Moreno, who announced that the prison at the center of the city, about 30 miles from the capital, was declared ind a state of emergency for 15 days.

The regional commissioner of the National Civil Police, Mauricio Arriaza Chicas, said the riots were started at 06:00 hours for alleged rivalry for control of areas of the prison.

Media reports from the scene said that anti-riot forces have entered the prison to monitor the situation and make an internal requisition.

They added that police cordoned off the area and maintain strict security.
