UNESCO: Respect Education of Roma, Other Marginalized Children

Paris, Jun 28 (Prensa Latina) UNESCO requested respect for diversity in the education of Roma (Gypsy) children and other marginalized groups, in a message sent to an international conference on the issue meeting Tuesday and Wednesday in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The main goal of a quality, pro-integration education is putting an end to every kind of discrimination, promoting social cohesion, and trying to develop the potential of all individuals, particularly members of the most vulnerable and marginalized groups, the message underlined.

There are many obstacles for access to education by the Roma, one of the most numerous minorities in Europem with an estimated population of eight to 12 million people, according to UNESCO.

Low levels of schooling is a common problem among Roma communities, and segregation in schools has led to low attendance levels and high drop-out rates, UNESCO said.
