Peru: Expectations Over Solutions of Social Conflicts

Lima, Jun 24 (Prensa Latina) Expectations intensified Friday about solving social conflicts in Peru after President-elect Ollanta Humala called upon outgoing President Alan Garcia “not to leave a minefield behind.”

Strikes in the Andean provinces bordering Bolivia and others in the Puno region continued, while talks between protest leaders and government representatives have not yet led to a solution.

Concerns over the social situation intensified after the deaths of three people in the city of Huancavelica who were fired on by police during demonstrations over the creation of a university.

According to Humala, the outgoing government should assume its constitutional responsibility of maintaining social peace.
