Tegucigalpa, Jun 21 (Prensa Latina) Honduran officials and police may be investigated for illegal enrichment after the signing of an agreement with the Superior Court of Auditors.
The Internal Affairs Department found that young police officers with basic wages own estates valued at two million lempiras (100,000 USD), luxury cars and mansions in exclusive zones, said Santos Simeon, chief of that department.
Simeon stated that the millions in assets of police officers could be involved in drug trafficking.
Security Secretariat authorities said about 100 complaints of police abuse were received in the first two moths of 2011, in addition to more than 800 registered in 2010.
In recent years, a lack of resources, and low morale and self-esteem among police have impeded effective work against common and organized crime in Honduras.
