San Salvador, June 12 (Prensa Latina) The governing Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) has launched a political battle to recover the local government in the capital in municipal and legislative elections of March 11, 2012.
The country’s largest party proclaimed Congressman Jorge Shafik Handal Vega on Saturday as its candidate for mayor of San Salvador, at a crowded event.
The secretary general of the FMLN, Medardo Gonzalez, stressed the social and revolutionary background of Handal Vega, who is the son of the historic leader of the Front, Shafik Jorge Handal, who died in 2006.
Gonzalez described Handal Vega as a luxury candidate because of his ability, fighting personality and long experience as a civil servant in the Central American Parliament and the Legislative Assembly.
In his acceptance speech, Handal reiterated its commitment to meet with humility and responsibility his new political duties to include San Salvador in the process of change taking place in the country after the electoral victory of the FMLN in 2009.
The FMLN ruled in San Salvador from 1997 to 2009 when Norman Quijano, of the rightist Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) won the election.
Handal promised to build a modern, organized, productive and safe city, “which can only be achieved if it is more inclusive”, he said.
