EU Condemns Attack on West Bank Mosque

Brussels, Jun 8 (Prensa Latina) The European Union on Wednesday condemned the attack against a West Bank mosque by a group of extremist Israeli settlers on Tuesday.

“These provocations undermine regional efforts for promoting global peace,” said the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Catherine Ashton.

The EU representative said that the attack is a provocation that threatens the Israel-Palestine peace process, and called for respecting freedom of religion as “an essential value.”

Ashton urged Israel to investigate the attack and try those responsible for the burning of the mosque in Maghayer village, located near Ramallah city.

According to witnesses, Jewish settlers threw a burning tyre into the mosque in an attempt to burn down the facility.

Villagers said they awoke for morning prayers to find smoke billowing from their mosque. Hebrew graffiti was daubed on the walls of the mosque with racist messages and slogans against Arab people.

One of the slogans in Hebrew said Alei Ayin, which was the name of an unauthorised Israeli settlement demolished by Israeli police last week, causing fierce clashes and promises of revenge.
