Santiago, Chile, May 31 (Prensa Latina) The Chilean Students Federation (Confech) confirmed it will hold a national strike on Wednesday to protest for-profit education, a new link in a wave of demonstrations against the neoliberal model.
The university associations that make up Confech made the decision after a deadline expired that they had given to national authorities to respond to their demands to defend public education.
In a last attempt to obtain a response, student leaders from the capital met on Monday with Education Minister Joaquin Lavin.
The meeting was unsuccessful, leading to the confirmation of the university strike scheduled for June 1.
The Confech wants more government money for public schools, which are practically bankrupt.
Student leaders from the cities of Valparaiso, Concepcion and Talca expressed their support for the national protest, and the Chilean Teachers Association said it would also join to this rally.
