USA: Tornado Kills 3 in Georgia

Washington, May 27 (Prensa Latina) Another tornado with winds of up to 140 kilometers per hour killed three people in Atlanta, Georgia, officials said today.

Daniel Alonso, 19, and two unidentified women were killed by falling trees on Thursday amid the powerful winds, witnesses told the ABC television network.

Alonso, who lives in Mableton, Atlanta, was cleaning debris in his driveway when a tree fell on him, his grandfather, Daniel Robert Johnson, told the TV station.

Two other women were trapped by a falling tree in Buckhead, Georgia, when a driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed, according to testimony from firefighters to ABC.

On Thursday there were 600 reports of adverse weather conditions in this country, including five tornadoes moving from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada and Vermont in the northeastern United States.

Meanwhile, emergency workers in Joplin, Missouri, continued searching for 232 missing people after a tornado struck this city of 50,000 on Sunday. Four schools in Joplin were destroyed or heavily damaged, but the district superintendent promised that classes would resume in August. This year has been the deadliest in the United States with respect to tornadoes since 1953, with more than 500 deaths, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
