China Proposes Regional Tsunami Alert System

Beijing, May 25 (Prensa Latina) China is proposing a regional tsunami alert system for exchanging information and improving forecasts on natural disasters.

The initiative would include this nation and eight others on the South China Sea (Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore), said Yu Fujiang, an official of the Oceanic State Administration (OSA).

A tsunami in the area could have devastating consequences for those countries, emphasized Yu, who is subdirector of the National Maritime Environmnet Forecasting Center, quoted by China Daily newspaper.

The experience of the devastating March 11 earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan, which devastated coastal communities and killed or left missing some 25,000 people, proved the urgent need for some kind of alert, he said.
