Allende’s Remains Exhumed to Clear up his Death

Santiago de Chile, May 23, (Prensa Latina) The remains of former Chilean President Salvador Allende were exhumed Monday to settle speculation that has prevailed ever since his death at La Moneda Palace on September 11, 1973.

The exhumation took place at the General Cemetery of Santiago de Chile, with the participation of a dozen local and foreign experts.

United Nations anthropologist Luis Fonderbrider and experts from Argentina, Colombia, Spain, Great Britain, and the United Nations are among the experts working on this case.

The exhumation of AllendeâÖs remains is considered crucial for clearing up the real cause of his death. Human rights activists say he was murdered.

Chilean jurist Eduardo Contreras says it is essential to finally determine with scientific rigor and judicial certainty whether the death of the former president was a homicide or a suicide.

Contreras made clear that whatever the conclusion, nothing will diminish the dignity of the former head of state in his final moments, or free of responsibility the military generals who besieged and bombed La Moneda Palace.

The decision to investigate the circumstances of Allende’s death emerged after the presentation of a list of 726 complaints early this year by human rights groups related to victims of the Pinochet military dictatorship (1973-1990). hr/rab/ajs/tpa
