Vietnam Holds Historic Elections

Por By Charly Morales Valido

Hanoi, May 22 (Prensa Latina) Vietnam is holding historic elections on Sunday, in which the people will elect the representatives of their aspirations and demands for the next five years.

For the first time, the elections of the National Assembly (Parliament) and the Peoples Committees (local governments) are being held on the same day.

This success of this organizational challenge will be measured at dusk today.

Prensa Latina saw discipline prevail in the central district of Ba Dinh, and as expected, the elderly were the first to fulfill their civic duty.

At 07:00 local time the 91,438 polling stations opened in all 63 provinces, except in 13 remote districts that were authorized to carry out elections earlier. The polls will close at 19:00 local time and results will be announced next week.

Once the Parliament is formed, the deputies will vote for their new leader, the president, prime minister and cabinet members.
