Islamabad, May 21 (Prensa Latina) At leat 16 people died Saturday in northwestern Pakistan as the result of a fire sparked by an attack on a NATO tanker truck en route to supply troops in Afghanistan.
DawnNews television reported that the tragedy occurred early Saturday in the town of Landi Kotal, in the northwestern tribal region of Khyber, near the Afghan border.
DawnNews also said 11 NATO supply vehicles were destroyed on Friday night near the town of Torkham town, but no deaths or injuries were reported.
The convoy had stopped in a parking lot when it was attacked by alleged Islamic rebels who operate in the region.
According to unofficial figures, NATO lost more than 200 tanker trucks in 2010 in Pakistan to attacks carried out by armed rebels linked to the Afghan Taliban movement and to Al Qaeda.
