France: Anti-G8 Protest Before Deauville Summit

Paris, May 21 (Prensa Latina) Thousands of people are expected to arrive in the city of Le Havre on Saturday for demonstrations against the G-8 Summit in Deauville next weekend.

French authorities mounted a heavy police operation and access to the beach was forbidden.

According to protest organizers, the anti-G8 demonstrations are aimed at protesting the policy of the “rich” that will be debated in the seaside resort of Deauville, where G8 representatives will take measures that will further harm the poor, they say.

The pacifists, trade unionists and anti-globalization and anti-nuclear activists announced other festive, mass actions in Le Havre, about 40 kilometers from the summit.

On Sunday, the protesters will hold a social forum to debate issues such as solidarity, the fight against nuclear energy after the catastrophe in Fukushima, immigration and the austerity plans imposed on poor nations.

The G8 summit brings together the presidents and heads of state of the United States, Germany, Russia, France, Britain, Italy, Canada and Japan, along with top Latin American leaders and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
