Venezuela Seizes 14.81 Tons of Drugs in 2011

Caracas, May (Prensa Latina) Venezuelan authorities have seized 14.81 tons of drugs so far this year, the National Anti-Drug Office reported.

According to figures published by this office, 5.43 tons of marijuana, 9.27 of cocaine and smaller amounts of heroin, crack and bazuco were seized so far 2011.

Some 6,542 people were arrested in 4,509 operations by the Bolivarian National Guard, the Department of Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations, the Bolivarian National Police, the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service and state and municipal police.

Venezuela sees itself as a victim of drug trafficking, because it is forced to devote huge resources and efforts to preventing and fighting that problem, despite not producing drugs or having high consumption rates.

Venezuela is also located in the middle of the routes between Colombia and the main markets.
