Ecuadorian Referendum Vote Envisions New Challenges

Quito, May 17 (Prensa Latina) With 95 percent of votes already counted until Tuesday, the results of the referendum show a clear victory of the “Yes” votes, despite the maneuvers of the opposition for not recognizing this. The proposed laws will be implemented, but not without challenges, .

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa was right when he called the private press the main enemy of the government in this referendum, since the manipulation of the information confused sectors of population who voted No, and it is already preparing new attacks.

As the leaders of the ruling PAIS Alliance Movement have said, the electoral results show a solid democracy, in which 11.2 million voters decided to support each one of the 10 questions, and in which the triumph of the Yes nationwide is unquestionable.

In a unitary State ruled by a Constitution ratified in 2008 by the vast majority of the Ecuadorians, the decisions of this referendum are compulsory for all the country, not excluding the provinces voted No.

That was the response given by the government to the leaders of the Andean province of Cotopaxi and Amazonian Zamora Chinchipe, who called for resistance to the national will expressed at the polls.

After the National Electoral Council announces the official results on Friday or Sunday May 22, due to delays in the vote count of Guayas province, the countryâÖs most populous region, the next stage of confrontation will be the National Assembly.
