Quake Death Toll Rises To 8 in Spain

Madrid, May 12 (Prensa Latina) Eight dead, dozens of injured, thousands of homeless, and considerable damage was the initial outcome of two earthquakes that shook the southern region of Murcia on Wednesday, officials said Thursday.

According to reports from the National Geographic Institute, a 4.4-magnitude quake occurred at 16:00 hours local time, followed by a second, more destructive 5.2-magnitude quake at 19:00 hours.

The quakeâ�Ös epicenter was located at the Tercia Mountains in Lorca, 70 kilometers away from Murcia, and approximately 10,000 were left with damaged or destroyed homes, Spanish television (TVE) reported.

The eastern town of Lorca, with a population of more than 92,000, is located in one of the most dangerous seismic zones of the Iberian Peninsula, the National Center of Seismology said.
