Havana, May 7 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is the No. 3 tourist destination in the Caribbean, according to Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero.
The minister spoke at a working session of the 31st International Tourism Fair FITCuba 2011 (May 2-7),at the historic Morro-Cabaña Fortress.
Marrero said next year Fair will be held on Cayo Santa Maria, in central Villa Clara province, from May 8-11, 2012.
He added that next yearâÖs fair will be dedicated to Villa Clara’s cays, family tourism and Argentina as the guest country.
The main goal, he pointed out, is to improve competitiveness and quality and to promote Cuba’s culture, history and traditions.
In 2010, 2,792 hotel rooms were inaugurated (more than 47,000 all over the country), and many of the newest capacities are located in the cays north of Villa Clara and in Varadero beach.
In less than 10 years, Cuba became the No. 3 Caribbean island destination, and this excludes the 50 percent of the tourist issuing market held by the United States, due to the blockade imposed on Cuba by that country for more than five decades, Marrero said.
Since 1990, Cuba has received 30 million tourists, despite Washington’s measures against Havana, the tourism minister said.
