UN Calls for Halt to Israeli Settlement

United Nations, Jan 17 (Prensa Latina) The UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian people on Monday called the international community to prove political will and action to halt the construction of Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The UN committee called on the world to unequivocally reaffirm its principled position on the issue of settlements to force Tel Aviv to meet their obligations.

The future of the peace process is on the line and the international community must send a clear message: the building of settlements is illegal and incompatible with peace and must be stopped, according to a communiqué of this UN committee published on Monday.

The document rejects Israel’s intention to continue the policy of colonization and condemns the destruction of Palestinian homes to build settlements despite world condemnation.

The document also denounces the acts of vandalism, theft, desecration of cemeteries, hostility and intimidation against the Palestinian people that are violations of human rights and are tolerated by Israeli authorities.

The UN Security Council will hold on Wednesday a debate on the situation in the Middle East and the Palestine issue. It is possible that a draft resolution condemning Israeli settlements will be presented.
