Diana Nyad Ends 2nd Attempt to Swim from Cuba to Florida

Havana, Aug 9 (Prensa Latina) U.S. open-water swimmer Diana Nyad decided to end her second attempt to swim 103 miles from Cuba to Florida as she reached the halfway point.

After 29 hours of swimming, the 61-year old Nyad had to stop due to backache, heavy swells and asthma symptoms that did not allow her to optimize her breathing capacity. Continue reading

Russia Defeats Cuba in Women’s Volleyball Grand Prix

Bangkok, (Prensa Latina) The Russia women’s team defeated Cuba 3-1 on Friday in competition group B on the first day of the 2011 Volleyball Grand Prix, in the city of Nakhopathom.

Russia, the defending champion, won 24-26, 25-18, 25-23, and 25-20 in 1:41 hours. The Russians took advantage of their height and played strong offense, headed by Ekaterina Gamova, 2.02 meters high, who totaled 24 points, including 20 attacks and four blocks. Continue reading

Rio de Janeiro,  (Prensa Latina) The Brazilian male volleyball team’s head coach Bernardo Rezende (Bernardinho) said Monday the competing group for his team will be quite hard at the finals of the 2011 Volleyball World League.

Bernardinho said he called Group E “the group of death” in his Monday statements to the website of the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) when he referred to his team’s inclusion in such a group. Continue reading

Blatter Remains as Head of FIFA

Zurich, Switizerland, (Prensa Latina) Swiss Joseph Blatter will remain at the helm of the International Football Federation (FIFA), in the wake of his re-election on Wednesday during the 61st Congress of the body.

Blatter, 75, got 186 of the 205 possible votes, said Vice President of FIFA, Argentine Julio Grondona.

Blatter then becomes the third president remaining longest in the post after French Jules Rimet and Brazilian Joao Havelange. He first assumed his position in 1998 and when he completes his fourth term he would have served for 17 years.

He had no rival in this election in the wake of Qatari Mohammed Bin Hammanâ�Ös temporary disqualification for alleged corruption.
